The presentation of Tomsk Region, which hosts CMAS Finswimming World Championship in July 2020, was held in the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.
On behalf of the Governor Sergei Zhvachkin the presentation of Tomsk Region, future host of the main finswimming event in the world, was done by the head of the information policy department of the administration of the Tomsk Region Alexey Sevostyanov.
The performance was set in the Oceanographic Museum that was inaugurated in 1910 by Monaco’s Prince Albert I, in the same hall where 60 years ago then director of museum Jacques-Yves Cousteau together with like-minded colleagues established the World Underwater Federation (CMAS).
The 60th General Assembly anniversary was held by the CMAS President Anna Arzhanova and Secretary General Hassan Baccouche. Heads of underwater federations from all over the world took part in the Assembly. The high status of this General Assembly was emphasized by the appearance of the reigning monarch of the Principality of Monaco Albert II during one of its events.
Alexey Sevostyanov thanked CMAS as well as the head of Monaco Underwater Federation and administration of the Oceanographic Museum for the honor granted to hold in such historical place a presentation of the 2020 World Championship capital for the the main people of world underwater sport.
“Tomsk Region is located in the center of Russia, in the heart of Siberia, and we have all the chances to organize one of the best world championships due to three reasons – said Alexey Sevostyanov. First of all, we have all the necessary infrastructure. Four years ago we built one of the best aquatics centers in Russia. It is equipped with the latest technology and conforms to highest international standards. Secondly, the city of Tomsk has a positive experience of organizing international finswimming events – we successfully held World Cup Golden Final and World Junior Championship. Many finswimmers of national teams and clubs multiply participated in the international competition “Snow Fins”.
But, the main reason for our optimism – in Tomsk we love underwater sport – emphasized Alexey Sevostyanov. 60 years ago, soon after the foundation of CMAS, first underwater activities clubs were created in Tomsk. Achievements of Tomsk finswimmers are known all across the world. Thousands of young people practice finswimming. The World Championship Organizing Committee is led by the Governor Sergei Zhvachkin. Therefore, we will demonstrate the highest level of hospitality. We invite to Tomsk each of you, all world’s federations and we will try to do all so that the summer in Siberia in 2020 will be hot!”
Also, in the region’s delegation were Tomsk Polytechnic University Vice-Rector Maksim Vedyashkin, Tomsk Region Underwater Sport Federation president Natalia Grechikhina and federation’s general manager, 5-time world finswimming champion Andrei Burakov.
